Tenerife

Updated: Jan 16

An island with a city vibe and so much to discover: from the natural pools to Teide's National Park.

Playa de Los Roques, in the Northwest side of Tenerife

A tropical island

My first impression when I arrived to Tenerife, back in September 2019, was that it reminded me a lot of the Portuguese Madeira island. After all, this Canary Island is not that far away.

From the banana plantations spread throughout the North side to the natural swimming pools, the landscapes will astonish you.

Mountains in Masca

My recommendation: rent a car!

There is just so much to see and the island is bigger than it seems, as you have to drive around the Teide volcano, so a car will definitely help you visiting villages that are more remote like Masca.

Where to go?

These are the places I have visited on my 4.5 days stay in Tenerife:

  • Playa de los Roques (pictured above)

  • Charco del Viento for a swim

  • Paisaje Protegido de la Rambla de Castro, with a view to the church

  • Piscinas Naturales de El Caletón & Vila de Garachico, where you can find as well some souvenirs shops

  • Masca village for the best views to the mountains

  • Mirador de Cherfe

  • Punta del Hidalgo, less crowded natural pools

  • Taganana

  • Mirador dos Playas for the best view to Playa de Las Teresitas

  • Playa de Las Gaviotas, in my opinion, the best beach with warmer water

  • San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a very cute village with streets filled with shops and people enjoying their tapas throughout (I recommend staying at La Asomada del Gato)

If you're on the Southern side of the airport, you can also go to Playa del Médano, where there are many restaurants nearby as well.

I also went to Playa de las Américas, but found it is a very touristic area and you'll find many shops there, but there are much better beaches around the island.

Unfortunately, we arrived already after the last cable car ride so we couldn't go to the Teide Cable Car (Teleférico del Teide), so I would recommend you checking the schedule in advance.

Where to eat?

  • Restaurante El Sótano, a seafood restaurant where you can enjoy the sea breeze and view. Definitely recommend!

  • Bodegón Tocuyo, in La Laguna, is a tapas restaurant and is usually quite full. It is worth the wait though!

Un saludo,
